"Responding- Really Responding- to Other Students' Writing Reading Response"

  • I would say this article is about doing a good job and helping out the writer edit a paper in a helpful matter. Commenting on other peoples papers helps students develop the content and thought of their writing. There will always be many different readers reading your papers, that pick up on many different things, and respond with their own individual idea that someone has already thought was good or bad. Having someone edit a paper may help a person see what he or she has to revise and make better to continue an ongoing work as a writer. The author stated “Point to problems and areas for improvement but do it in a constructive way.” See what you can do to push a writer outside of themselves to stretch their writing further then they have ever done before.

  • I would say the author did argue his point well because he gave clear vivid examples and pictures to help show what a good paper edited looked like. He also gave examples on how to get started, what to say what not to say, how much or too little. I would say the audience would agree with her instead of disagree because she pretty much covered all she could say about a student’s paper. There are no holes left in this argument because the author covered just about everything when it comes to editing anther student’s paper. Gave me ideas and questions I could use on my blog more often. Also gave me ideas on how to help and give advice on papers instead of being like a teacher.

  • I would agree with this author a lot because of the fact that he gave examples of an assignment between students. He also showed how to get started, The writers interests and aims for their topic while writing, the work of the class, the stage of drafting, comments, how to influence the writer to do better was covered and more thought out the whole article. This article just made me think about how papers are looked at and graded during years of school. It didn’t really affect my thinking on school? It just made me think of better ways to respond to people on their papers.

  • My golden line from this article would be “Consider youself a friendly reader. A test pilot. A roommate who’s been asked to look over the paper and tell the writer what you think.” I picked this because you don’t tell a person what he or she wants to hear. You tell them the truth to help them become a better writer give them ideas you never thought of.  Don’t just say something’s to get the editing part done take your time and put effort towards it just like you would want your paper treated.

" My feelings on Two articles from class"

  • My first opinion on the article Excerpts from “In the Basement of the Ivory Tower” by Professor X was not really straight forward and didn’t really give enough examples on why one student made an “F” on the first writing assignment. I think the article could have given more examples of students who know how to write well compared to students who fail like Ms. L.   I also think students like Ms. L should put more time and effort into her work and maybe she would have gotten a better outcome, then having an “F” on her first assignment. This article was not interesting to me nor held my attention the whole way through my reading. I had to reread several times to understand what was going on in this article. I just kept saying to myself why am I reading this ?

  • Also on the article “Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work” was very interesting, I did not dose away in my brain with other thoughts, and my full attention was focused on what I was reading. I learned new information and thought about teacher’s skills for helping students. In fifth grade I also learned how children have a fair amount of officially sanctioned say over what happens in the class and often negotiate what work is to be done in the classroom. I felt this article to be helpful and gave me fluent ideas that kept popping into my head to write about as I was reading. This article did not bore me in any way I wanted to keep reading more in class to get more new knowledge I never knew about.

"In the Basement of the ivory Tower" by Professor X"

This article was about an instructor who gave a student an “F” on the first writing assignment. An older woman in her forties gave her teacher a hard time. She had no computer skills and didn’t know how to use the internet. After class the teacher would try to help her but she was not absorbing any of the information.  He gave her an idea and said “you might want to get extra help; you could set up a private session with the librarian for extra help.” After all many people cannot right a research paper, and a few have to do so in a work place day to day in life. We learn in a college where we pay high amounts of tuition for to pursue a degree and improve skills.

In my opinion I feel like that author could have argued the point a little bit better, using more examples then just one student who didn’t understand the material. There should be more examples of why students receive a failing grade on papers. There should also be more examples on how teachers decide to grade a paper and give an “F” as a grade. I think the author is trying to show how a particular student was unfamiliar with computers, changed her topic several different times and failed an English paper for her first time to make her a better student in writing. I don’t really think there’s to many holes in the argument, I’m just left with the question; what is the authors point of showing an example of one student who couldn’t write a paper? How did she understand the concept of writing a good paper?

I agree and disagree with this author because he gave me ideas about some writing and reminded me the pros and cons of writing a good paper and failing a paper in English. Then again I don’t understand why the article was concentrated on one particular student who failed her first paper. He just focused on her negatives about the paper being too short and her doing a bad job. I feel like that wouldn’t motivate people who can’t write well like myself, to get the message directed to the reader the way the author wants to. I feel like teachers in schools should prepare us to become better writers for our future. Other than that this article didn’t change my thinking about school.

My golden line from this article would be : “Her deficits don’t make her a bad person or even unintelligent or unusual”  I picked that line because I feel like we all come from different situations, as being in a high school or home schooled  and we all learn different. I feel like some people are more advanced in subjects then others, and others have talents that most people don’t have. But that doesn’t make people unusual or dumb just because there different or don’t understand something.

"My 54- Year Love Affair with the SAt Reading Response"

  •   I would say the central argument of the reading was about the SAT tests and throughout the years the test was made up different. So the author gave us examples on how the SAT expected students to know not the just the “what” of subjects, but more important “how and why.” The author also showed how the SAT effected education and students aspirations.
  • I think the author Stanley Kaplan did an excellent job with getting the point across of why the SAT is important to the world of education as well as students. Some assumptions I noticed the author making was the changes of the SAT tests though out the years didn’t have the same influence as today because many colleges weren’t using the scores in an admission process just yet. I think the author shows the concept of understanding the SAT tests had tricky questions and even trickier answers with more than one good choice. Answering SAT questions requires focus, reasoning, and practice.

  • I’m not really left with any questions, because if anything I learned new information from this article that I wasn’t too familiar with. I agree with the author. This is the first time I haven’t read an article and forgot what I was reading. I agree with the author that the SAT could predict how well a student would perform during the first six months of college, and it could safeguard against grade inflation and poor, less demanding curricula. I thought more about how the author is right high school teachers complained they couldn’t prepare students for such an array of tests such as the SAT because they can’t and won’t. A challenge teacher’s face in schools now days are giving students the tools they need to get the job done. Students need to be encouraged to keep on learning not discouraged.

  • My golden line from this article would be “I had to keep students interested, keep them learning, keep them laughing, and –above all- build their confidence that they could succeed. I wanted them to love learning as much as I loved teaching.”  I picked this line because I feel it’s important for a student to have confidence, and it can’t get no better when it comes from a teacher who loves to teach from their heart.  A teacher wants to teach new information to students and guide them along the way, not let them down and make them feel worthless. You need a great teacher to fully understand a subject in school.

"No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 Reading Response."

In 2001 President W. Bush announced No child Left behind. .” His major concern was “too many of our neediest children are being left behind.” The No left behind act was to improve the performance of America’s elementary and secondary schools while at the same time ensuring that no child should be trapped in a failing school. The author gave examples on how the new law was focused on development and class reduction, that focus more on practices grounded in scientifically based research to prepare, train, and convert high-quality teachers.

I think the author did argue the point well because of the many examples we were given and, stated facts in the article. The author gave main points about the Presidents No Child Left behind Act, (NCLB) and shows many opportunities students have, to attend a better school to improve academic skills instead of failing, and falling behind grades and years within classmates. The assumptions of the author is their agreeing with the act and stand for the law to enhance better schools and produce drug free safe environment to demonstrate effectiveness for students. The author states a lot of quotes and facts not really making people disagree, just making people agree with the (NCLB) act.  Some people may agree with this article for the fact of no children being behind, and using more funds to produce this is ok, and then some may not just really depends on how the reader takes this authors article. The only question I was left with was how did or is the law effecting schools up to date? Did it change students and teachers attitudes towards school?

I totally agree with the author I just would of wrote this article more straight forward to people for people to have a better understanding of why President George W Bush decided to  come up with act of no children being left behind. I think the reading put an affect to my thinking that school is very important at a young age if children are young and fail in third grade then they will lose hope as they grow older because once your young you never let actions and reactions be for gotten you keep them forever. I think we need to produce hope for a student at a young age and this is an article that was a perfect example for students and teachers.

The golden line that stuck out to me the most would be “There will be no excuses made for why we can’t push our children across the achievement gap over to the fertile side- and eventually, to equity, shining in the sky.” This stuck out to me because I know if teachers give us positive energy and a valuable way of teaching then it will push students harder to not give up and keep going!
